his incredible journey from world-class athlete to World War II bombardier


Louis Zamperini was in and out of trouble for much of his youth. Growing up in California in the 1920s, his family at one point guessed that he would end up in jail. But he also had a knack for navigating his way out of dire situations, ranging from a near-drowning incident to a house fire. And things began to look up for Zamperini in high school, as he showed a natural running ability — which would take him all the way to the Olympics in 1936.

However, Zamperini's early experiences in school and at the Olympics were mere precursors to his ultimate destiny as an American hero.
