You are not being selfish when you are paying tithe.
You are not being selfish when you are paying tithe.
Just like with every form of giving, it is done because this is God’s chosen method for making resources available in His house. It’s a privilege for us meaning that even if all Christians decide not to give today, God will in His omnipotence, still provide for His church. We give tithes and offerings because God says so. When we do it in faith and consistently, we are not being selfish if we expect a return because His word says so. We can’t be holier than God that said we should put Him to the test or holier than God that said when we sow sparingly/bountifully we’d reap sparingly/bountifully or holier than God that says He is able to make all grace abound to us such that we’d have surplus in all things. If God says that when we seek His kingdom every other thing in this life will be added to us, we are not being selfish or unholy for expecting that His Word be fulfilled in this regard.

It’s not only in paying tithes that blessings are promised. Giving generally of done consistently and in faith brings heavenly rewards. I say consistently because God will test your loyalty. If you have been consistent but that period comes when you are pressed financially and then you skipped your tithe, you haven’t passed the test except His mercy comes through. God is not man. He’s more interested in your heart and the strength of your character than what’s coming out of your hand.
The Bible urges us to Loose our lives and then gain it. The context of this instruction is for us to not preserve ourselves as it concerns the execution of God’s will. That is, if carrying out the will of God will bring punishment or stress or difficulty, don’t shirk from it. It’s not saying that we should fail to take any action in this life that is beneficial to our human existence.
