On a Day Like Today ~ July 24, 1774.  Caroline Fox, 1st Baroness Holland née Lennox, great granddaughter of HM King Charles II, died.

Lady Caroline was born in late March 1723 at Richmond House in London as the first child and eldest daughter of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and his wife Sarah Cadogan.  She was baptized as Georgiana Carolina but went by the name of Carolina throughout her life.  Her paternal grandfather was an illegitimate son of HM King Charles II.
In 1744 Caroline eloped with Henry Fox, a politician who was 18 years her senior which caused a great scandal in high society.  While her parents disapproved of the marriage, it was said to be a happy union.  The marriage produced 4 sons, 3 of which survived into adulthood.
Her father died in early August 1750 quickly followed by her mother in August 1751.  Her youngest 3 sisters were left in care of her younger sister, Emily Lennox, rather than Caroline due to the "scandal" of her marriage.  Lady Caroline resented this slight but hoped to redeem herself by presenting her younger sisters at court and helping them make good matches.  However, this was not to be as the future George III rejected a marriage to her younger sister Sarah who then went on to a disastrous marriage which ended in a Parliamentary granted dissolvement in 1776 on the ground of her sister's adultery.
In early May 1762 Caroline was created Baroness Holland of Holland in the Peerage of Great Britain and her husband was created Baron Holland of Foxley less than a year later.  Caroline's two spoiled sons, especially her oldest, caused her family much embarrassment and distress by gambling and falling into debt.

Lady Caroline was plagued by a mysterious and painful illness when her husband, who had suffered a stroke, died in early July 1774.  Caroline died 23 days later, on this day in 1774.  Interestingly enough, their eldest son died just 5 months later in December 1774.  They were all buried at All Saints in Farley, Wiltshire.
