The Romans took bathing to the next level.

The women's sections of the baths at Herculaneum (terme femminili) the rooms were called: the apodyterium (changing room) the warm room (tepidarium) and hot room (caldarium) The photo shown is the apodyterium. The mosaic flooring is piscatorial themed showing: octopus, squid, dolphins, sea serpents, fish and Neptune (Poseidon) as the central motif. The shelves on the walls were for storage and the bottom level would be for sitting and chatting while putting on sandals and rubbing ointments and lotions onto their freshly cleaned bodies.

Between the two levels of seating and storage we see extensive red paint and black point higher up. This means significant money was invested into the female section as this colour was nearly always accompanied by Category 3 artwork and features, graded by  1-4 with 4 being highly expensive and not seen that often as it is done by the greatest artists (often trained slaves) who created masterpieces as their masters would treat them better than some Roman citizen workers not capable of this quality. Even the arched ceiling is architecturally designed due to the perfectly spaced ridges which would have been painted probably white or white with yellow accents. The Romans took bathing to the next level.
