Painted Rocks

“Painted Rocks” are located on the western shore of Flathead Lake near Rollins, Montana USA. They are cliffs adorned with over 200 Native American markings. These ancient petroglyphs, similar to others in the Flathead Valley, are unique in their pristine setting as it is only accessible from the water. Researchers suggest that such sites held significant spiritual importance for early Native Americans. The original paintings, dating back approximately 3,000 years, were expanded upon by the Salish starting 700 to 800 years ago, with their last additions made between 1700 and 1900. Among the more than 100 distinct markings are depictions of animals such as buffalo, deer, and moose.
