Originally formed by Patti LaBelle, Cindy Birdsong, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash, they initially found success with doo-wop ballads like "Down the Aisle" and "You'll Never Walk Alone." After Birdsong left to join The Supremes, the group rebranded as Labelle in 1971, embracing a progressive soul style. They achieved major success with the 1974 hit "Lady Marmalade" and the album Nightbirds. Labelle was the first black pop band to perform at the Metropolitan Opera House and appear on the cover of Rolling Stone. Each member pursued solo careers after their 1976 tour, with Patti LaBelle enjoying significant success. The group reunited in 2008 and continued to perform until Sarah Dash's death in 2021. Labelle's music has influenced many artists and remains iconic, particularly "Lady Marmalade," which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.🎶❤️🖤
