In the summer of 1972, amidst the sun-drenched shores of Monasterace, a seemingly ordinary vacation took a thrilling turn for Stefano Mariottini, a Roman engineer with an eye for adventure. While snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters off the coast of Riace, he made a startling discovery: an eerie silhouette, reminiscent of a human hand, protruding from the sands below. Initially convinced he had stumbled upon a lost soul, he promptly notified the authorities, bracing himself for a morbid revelation. What ensued, however, was a breathtaking twist of fate. As divers plunged into the depths of the Ionian Sea, they unearthed not a corpse, but two magnificent bronze statues—the “Warriors from Riace.” Dating back to the 5th century BC, these exquisite figures unveiled a hidden chapter of ancient history, leaving an indelible mark on the tapestry of time.
