Learn Our History Today: On July 7, 1865, four conspirators of the Lincoln

assassination, Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt, were hung as a result of their involvement in the plot. The four had each played different roles in the assassination and the plot surrounding it. The plan was to murder not just President Abraham Lincoln but also the Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. John Wilkes Booth was the leader of the conspiracy, and he assigned Lewis Powell and David Herold to kill Seward, while George Atzerodt was to kill Johnson, and Booth himself was to kill Lincoln. 
Much of the conspiracy and the plans for escape were planned at the boarding house of Mary Surrat, and it was discovered that she had given supplies to Booth for his escape. Powell, Herold, and Atzerodt all failed in their parts of the conspiracy, with only Booth succeeding. In the days following, all the conspirators were quickly rounded up, with Booth being shot and the rest being arrested. Trials commenced, and convictions were swift.  Many people at the time expected President Andrew Johnson to pardon Surratt because she was a woman, and the United States government had never before executed a woman. The execution was delayed as long as possible, but the expected pardon never came. On July 7, Surratt and her three fellow conspirators were executed. She became the first woman ever executed by the federal government.

This floating island, known as the "Forty Acre Bog," is composed of peat, plant roots, mud, and even mature trees. These trees act as sails, catching the wind and moving the island around the lake. "The last American slave ship docked illegally in Mobile, Alabama in 1860, carrying about 160 West African captives. Among them was Cudjo Lewis, who recognized how his birth culture might be erased while toiling in this new land. So when he was freed, he purchased two acres and started a self-sufficient community of survivors of the last slave ship. Known to outsiders as Africatown, Lewis' neighborhood was modeled on his West African home, where extended families lived together, members conversed in their regional languages, and partook in traditions that might otherwise be lost to them in America. The Vasa, a heavily armed Swedish warship , sank in 1628 AD, less than a mile into its maiden voyage due to design flaws. Its top-heavy structure, burdened by 64 bronze cannons, coupled with insufficient ballast, made it unstable and led to its quick demise. After spending 333 years on the sea floor, it was recovered in 1961 in nearly perfect condition. Now displayed at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, it is celebrated as the best-preserved ship from the 17th century. The cold, brackish waters of the Baltic Sea played a crucial role in preserving the Vasa and its artifacts, making its recovery and ongoing conservation a significant achievement in marine archaeology.
