Here is an early promo photo featuring one of the greatest bands in the history of black metal, Austria’s Abigor, circa 1993. Recently I’ve been working my way back through the Abigor catalog, as I seem to do every month or so, and contemplating the artistic & spiritual heights that this band consistently reached. In my opinion, there are 3 equal components that have helped Abigor stand the test of time: first is their respect and understanding of black metal tradition and it’s origins (including satanism), secondly - and seemingly a perfect match to the first - is the bands dedication to innovation and experimentation, lastly is the band’s unparalleled technical ability and songwriting prowess. These three attributes are apparent from the bands debut album “Verwüstung…”(1994) all the way through their most recent effort “Totschläger…”(2020). In the past I have often stated that my favorite album from the band is 1997’s “Opus IV”, though I must admit I’ve had a slight change of heart. For my money, the greatest Abigor album came 10 years later with the release of “Fractal Possession” - an absolute monument of satanic art. While the band members are known for their staunch opinions that often ruffle the feathers of many black metal fans, I can’t help but prefer their attitudes when to the sea of non confrontational and apathetic cretins that plague modern “black metal”.
