Edward Sneed was executed by hanging in Independence.
On this day in history.
On June 24th, 1887, Ed Sneed was hung in the gallows at the county jail in Independence. The gallows stood where the 1907 addition now stands. In 1884, Sneed was convicted of killing 19 year old Orleans Loomis while they were out drinking together. His motive was that Loomis was an obnoxious drunk. Initially, Sneed was convicted of the killing and sentenced to death in 1884 but he contested it. He was granted a retrial and a stay of execution by the Missouri Supreme Court between 1884 and 1887. He could not escape his fate and was found guilty again in 1887. He was hung at 12:39 in the afternoon.
