The Nadir of Race Relations There is a chapter in American history called the nadir of race relations, which lasted from 1877 to about 1923. This period was when racism in the country was more open and pronounced than it had been during any other period in the nation's history. After the failure of the reconstruction era during Andrew Johnson’s presidency, race relations became extremely tense. Many white supremacist groups developed and African-Americans were living in the mist of racial terrorism. At the climax of the nadir era of race relations, number of well off African-American communities were destroyed and sabotaged. In 1919 there was the emergence of what was called the Red Summer. This occurred from African-Americans having moved into the industrialized areas of the north.
